EDP - Wind Farm Management

The increasing popularity of renewable energy is being reflected in an accelerating programme of wind generation development in many parts of the world. Huge numbers of wind turbines are planned to be built over the coming years and their presence in the generation portfolio is creating significant challenges both for energy markets and for trans-mission networks. With over 25.000 wind farms already in place across Europe and European wind turbine capacity set to double between now and 2015, it is vital that they are managed efficiently and in a timely manner to ensure the sustained growth of renewable energy sources.

In November 2006 Logica announced that it had been chosen by Energias de Portugal (EDP) to provide a control and management system for 48 wind farms across Iberia.

In undertaking this exciting project Logica is exploiting its broad range of IT capabilities developed from many years experience of providing leading-edge, mission critical solutions to the energy and utilities sector. In addition to the wind farm control and management system, Logica has extensive capabilities in the Geospatial information Systems (GIS) area that are invaluable during the planning phase of wind farm development. The location of wind turbines is highly dependent on physical location relative to prevailing wind conditions, with site topology being particularly important if the turbine output is to be optimised.
